We moved the system to LCC! Steve Barton, Steve Brenner, Eric Phillips and I converged at Clif's place last Friday night at midnight. Clif shut down the system and we packed the main computer, all the disks, and the backup workstation into a VW van and sslloowwlly, gently rolled downtown with the precious cargo, mindful that over 1600 people were depending on us to get it right. When we arrived at LCC, Steve Van Devender, Darrell Fuhriman and Bruce Berryhill had everything in readiness, including pizza. It was a big step for us and it went pretty smoothly, all in all. SteveV, Clif and Darrell had the system all plugged back together, booted up and on-line right about 3:00 am, as promised. There are now over 30 phone lines fed from the main 687-2996 dial-up number (soon to be 45) and efn is connected to the Internet by a T-1 link running at 1.5 Mb/sec (over 20x faster than before). Since we are now located closer to the USWest building, there should be no future "scarce copper" problems like we had in the old location when we couldn't buy more phone lines without long lead times. Consequently, we'll be able to have the number of phone lines track membership closely and getting connected won't be as hard as it has been. With so many people online at once, We're starting to push the efn workstation to its limits and need to buy about 32 Mb more memory for it. Donations for October were over $5,500-- still not breaking even, but good, considering I haven't bothered you with any fundraising messages for almost a whole month (another reason to be thankful?). Even though that amount was down a little from September (when the article in the Register Guard brought almost 300 of you to our virtual community here at OPN) it was ahead of projections and we are grateful for that because moving expenses (the overlapping cost of having two sites and two internet connections during the transition) have taken a big toll on our budget. So, please continue the excellent support you've given us the last two months and help us settle into our new abode and get back on the growth track financially. Since we're approaching the end of the year, many of you may wish to make an extra, tax-deductible donation to OPN in November or December above and beyond your priority access fees. We haven't received any grant money or even had any grants approved for funding yet; we've received no government funds, and we're behind our projections for major donations, so... we are relying very heavily to almost exclusively on grass-roots contributions right now. Please consider saying thanks to OPN with a contribution of $50, $100 or whatever you can afford. Your support now counts more than ever. TRICK OR TREAT 8<:) Providing a public service internet connection like OPN's is a TRICKy undertaking. We hope you're happy about the information that we are making available through EFN/OPN and appreciate the Public Broadcasting-inspired funding model (free access to all with incentives for contributors). Please take a moment and TREAT us all to a check (payable "Oregon Public Networking" or "OPN") to: OPN, Attn: Fundraising PO Box 1914 Eugene OR 97440-1914 Remember to write your user-id (login name) on the check in the "memo" or "for" space in the lower left. Thanks for your support. P.S. For details about priority access and donations, please read the Priority Access FAQ which can be accessed by selecting (D)ocs from the main menu. +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Oregon Public Networking -- "Connect Globally; Dial Locally" +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+
