At present, we provide up to 1.5 Mb for free with each login account and that amount is the same for priority access and regular members. But disk space is still scarce. For example, we'd like to keep newsgroup articles on line longer, but that takes a lot of space since we receive about 90 Mb of news postings every day. To keep articles on-line for a week would take about 630 Mb. A month? 2.7 Gigabytes. We'd like to make room for more public domain software, but we don't yet have enough room for volunteers to build and test software prior to making it available. Also, the automatic 1.5 Mb/member means we need 1.65 Gb for 1100 home directories and we expect this to double by early '95. In order to make sure we can fund future disk space expansion, we've decided that we must charge a fee for extra disk space at this stage and the board finally settled on a rate of $1/Mb/Month. We don't have enough staff to keep close tabs on disk space usage and payment, so instead of renting disk space month-to-month, we are renting it by the year (May 1 - April 30) and in standard quantities of 2Mb, 5Mb, 10Mb, 20Mb, 50Mb and 100Mb. Yes, it's expensive, but what can I say, we need the money and will put it to good use. So, if you order disk space this month (for Oct-April, a 7 month period), send the following amounts: 1.5 + 2 Mb extra = $14 1.5 + 5 Mb extra = $35 1.5 + 10 Mb extra = $70 1.5 + 20 Mb extra = $140 OPN's 15 MINUTES OF FAME Did you all catch the Register Guard article on OPN/EFN this week? In one day we received 100 requests for new accounts. The article was picked up by the Associated Press (AP) news service and appeared in several other papers all over the West. What we're all doing here with OPN and EFN is very unusual and we hope each and every one of you takes pride in the fact that together we're building a model for internet access that sets a precedent for public access all over the country. Let's keep it up! AUGUST DONATION TARGET REACHED The goal for August was $3716 and we raised over $4000, so I'm pleased to say that you and/or your fellow EFN citizens responded to the call to get us out of the Summer doldrums. Though expenses continue at over $8000 per month, we have strong institutional support from our founders that we anticipate will make up the estimated difference until we grow to the break even point. Our goal for September is $4200, so the pressure is still on, but there are more people on line than ever to help us reach the goal. Please take a moment and mail a check today (payable "Oregon Public Networking" or "OPN") to: OPN, Attn: Fundraising PO Box 1914 Eugene OR 97440-1914 Remember to write your user-id (login name) on the check in the "memo" or "for" space in the lower left. Thanks for your support. P.S. For details about priority access and donations, please read the Priority Access FAQ which can be accessed from the New or (A)lternate menu, (D)ocumentation and Help Menu, (P)riority Access FAQ selection. +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Oregon Public Networking -- "Connect Globally; Dial Locally" +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+
