QUESTION: HOW DOES PRIORITY ACCESS WORK? When your modem calls 687-2996 and it's busy, a "hunting" feature provided by the phone company automatically transfers you to the second line. If it's busy, you get transferred to the third line. And so on, up to the fifth line which is currently the one and only priority line (tty04). The priority line is the last in the hunting-order. You only get to it if all the free lines are busy. If tty04 is also busy, you get a busy signal. If you connect with tty04, you're screened by login name before the session proceeds. So, that's why there is no priority access phone number separate from the regular number (687-2996). Our goal is to make priority access mean that you can connect as easily as with most other on-line services and to use the income from this incentive to help support the free-for-all lines. Currently, anyone who's ever donated to EFN is on the priority access list, but we're setting things up so that in the future, priority will last either 1 month or ($donation/7) months ($7/month rounded to the nearest even number of months) whichever is longer. Work-for-priority exchanges are possible. Please inquire if you're interested (we have a llooonnnnnggg list of things to do). "WE DON'T CARE, WE DON'T HAVE TO, WE'RE THE PHONE COMPANY" Dept: We have learned that AT&T is offering dial-up access to the internet: $25 per month for one userid and telnet plus 12 to 18 cents a minute ($7.20 to $10.80 per hour) So, a half-hour a day, 5 days/week would be: 22*0.5*9+25 = $124/month! We at EFN would like to publicly thank AT&T for putting the fear of a commercialized internet into people's hearts, and simultaneously sending so many users and so much business our way. Aren't you glad you use EFN? Don't you wish everybody could? Wouldn't you like to make sure EFN never fades away? Now, while you're feeling good about EFN :-)... Please help make access to the internet a right and not just another privilege for the wealthy. Help us buy more modems and phone lines by mailing a check today (payable to "EFN") to: EFN, Attn: Fundraising PO Box 1221 Eugene OR 97440-1221 Then send an e-mail message to pledge@efn.org saying how much you're mailing in so we can update the pledge thermometer and add you to the priority access list. Thanks. "If the founding fathers were alive today, free access to the internet would be in the Bill of Rights" -- 8-{D ***EFN!NEWS***EFN!NEWS***EFN!NEWS***EFN!NEWS***EFN!NEWS***EFN!NEWS***
