EFN is a non-profit Oregon corporation** committed to harnessing the
emerging global data network to serve public interests by providing
access to the public and empowering the grass roots citizens.

My apologies to Woody Guthrie, but we at EFN really do want you to feel
like this is YOUR net.  We didn't create EFN to make money; we're
running and growing EFN to enhance human communication and take dialogue
beyond historical limitations of time and space in a forum that fosters
content and merit of ideas rather than marketing hype and sound bites.

We've used the internet enough to know the tremendous potential it
has to serve humanity-- enough that we believe network communications
should be a right and not a privilege.  And, as with other rights,
network communication comes with new responsibilities.

There is much that you can do to help make EFN's goal of universal
network access a reality in Eugene.  Part of it is money, and we'd like
to thank Jordan Lund, Jeremy White and Gene Williamson for their
generous contributions.  So far, about 2% of our users have pledged 15%
of our goal.  If another 40-50 people would contribute $20-$25 each, we
could reach our goal for February (BTW, yes, we know you need more
phone lines).

Please give this funding request some serious thought.  If you believe,
as we do, that the Internet could become a powerful agent for positive
changes in politics, education, social relations, technology, science,
art, music and more, then please help us create the infrastructure:
Mail a check for whatever amount you can spare to:

Then, send e-mail to me (marc) to let me know how much you're sending
in, when you mailed it, and what you would think about using VISA or
EFT to make automatic monthly contributions, if we were to set up for it.

If you can't send money at this time, consider helping make our
limited resources (phone lines) go further by using offline news
readers and not leaving your system idle when you're logged in.
We'll include more tips in future updates.

** NOTE: Though EFN is non-profit, we are not 501-c(3) tax deductable.  
Whether we apply for 501-c(3) later will depend upon whether we make
our money more from donations or business user fees.  Stay tuned.
