Users Like You! The "Eugene Free Community Network, Inc." was legally born on Jan. 31st. We've applied for a Tax-Id number and opened a bank account last week. Then we took all the donations we've received so far, $1800, and went into debt to put $2000 down on a REAL INTERNET connection from the Rainy Garden (RGnet) out of Portland. For those of you unaccustomed to life in the fast lanes of data communi- cations, the new 56Kb Internet connection would allow you to: * Remotely Login (rlogin and/or telnet) to any computer on the Internet worldwide (you must arrange for login accounts of course). * Use the File Transfer Protocol (ftp) to retrieve files from thousands of ftp servers all over the globe, much of it available to "anonymous" users (so no account is needed on the host system) * Plus much more than I can imagine yet. There are still some obstacles to completing the connection, so we can't yet promise when or absolutely if EFN will plug into the global Internet matrix, but we're doing our best and with some luck and help from people like you, we hope to make it happen some time in April. As you might imagine, this quantum leap in the quality of EFN's service costs money. We estimate we will need about $1000-$1500 per month to maintain full Internet service plus more phone lines, so I volunteered to organize a pledge drive, not unlike an OPB or KLCC "thon" for raising $1100 by midnight Feb. 28th. The first step is to give everyone a chance to be "thon-busters" by sending in your contributions right away. If we can reach our funding goal quickly, we won't bother you again until March 1. So, please open up your checkbook and write a check right now to "EFN" or "Eugene Free Community Network, Inc." (either will do, because "EFN" is now our registered DBA (doing-business-as) nick-name. Mail the checks to: EFN c/o Clif Cox P.O. Box 1221 Eugene, OR 97440 Then, send me (marc) a short e-mail saying 1) How much your donation was and when you mailed it in 2) Whether it's okay to thank you publicly on-line, 3) If you'd use an automatic monthly VISA contribution option if we made that available. 4) If you'd use an automatic monthly Electronic Funds Transfer if we were set up to receive EFT funds. I'll keep you all abreast of how we're doing on fund-raising in future newsflashes and updates. I'm Marc Baber. For now, we return you to your regularly scheduled programming...
